Even in our modern times, most of the motherboard and BIOS vendors are only supplying .EXE files to flash the BIOS. This trick shows you how to upgrade your BIOS with Linux. All you need is a blank CDR, a FreeDOS image and some tools.

I did exactly this just a couple weeks ago at work although I used a USB thumbdrive instead of a CD. Worked great! I bet you could even take this a step further and set up PXE booting and eliminate physical media all together. I might have to test that out tomorrow.
